The 165,000-year old skeleton is just one of 100 fossils, some up to 500 million years old, that the Discovery Channel Online will auction off over the next month. Discovery.com will team with Amazon.com Auctions to sell the items in a series of auctions starting August 9 and running through August 30.
Besides the bear skeleton, other fossils up for auction include a complete skeleton of an ichthyosauras, the Jurassic-era sea reptile, and a 90-million year old mollusk fossil.
Discovery.com officials, in a release, touted the event as a way to broaden interest in fossils, noting that collecting fossils usually requires extensive travel.
Amazon.com (Nasdaq:AMZN) will on Monday begin previewing the first set of items on its auctions page.
The Discovery Channel Store in Washington will host a physical sneak preview of the event Monday evening.
